Classification: IGP

Year: 2017

Alcohol: 13.5%

Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon (who would’ve thought eh?)

Not gonna lie, I bought this wine purely for the name. They have many other types such as a Merlot, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir that are easily to find, but this was the first one I grabbed as I have a handful of those already. Figured I’d give this one a go.

The scents to this wine are sweet but deep. Scents of black fruits such as blackberries and plum can be sniffed out. Despite the deep flavours you would expect of such fruits, especially compared to other wines previously reviewed, this one is quite acidic at the beginning. While the body to this wine is quite full, the flavours are not terribly distinct as they settle in your mouth. There is still a bit of an acid blend to the taste. You can get a hint of those dark fruit flavours, as well as other oaky flavours like chocolate, but the acidity somewhat overpowers them. There is a bit of a smoky and dare I say peppery (if only you had a nickel for every time I used “peppery” in a review eh?) finish with the flavours and a fairly dry and even somewhat bitter aftertaste with it (believe the technical term here is “very high in tannins”... give me my English PhD already). This wine is somewhat acidic from start to finish with light hints of those dark fruit flavours initially tasted, but not distinct enough to really take the time to enjoy or really develop in your mouth.

Not sure I’m a massive fan of this one by itself. The acidity may be a bit high for some; particularly for my tastes. The flavours are not distinct or bold enough either. If you like a more acidic wine, then this one my float your boat. I may be keen to try another one of their wines, but this one honestly didn’t do it for me.

Pairings: I had this with some Northern Chicken for dinner. Gotta say, the acidity of this wine and the spice on the chicken matched quite nicely. This is one that would go well with spicy food.

Overall Rating: On its own... 2 Languedoc Crosses out of 5. Would consider bumping it up to 3 if it's paired with a spicy food. I'll call it a 2.5 Languedoc Crosses out of 5

I’ve seen this and other Fat Bastard wines at almost every Wine and Beyond and Sobeys Liquor stores I've been to.
